His Astro navigation programme was already a bestseller in the 1980s. Now the pioneer and godfather of the blue water scene has ported it once again

An evergreen of yacht navigation is available again from today: Bobby Schenk has revised its Astro-Classic programme in version 2.0 and is now offering it on a USB stick in cheque card format.

The retro-style menu navigation still corresponds to the original version and is partly reminiscent of terminal programmes. The functionality also appears rather simple and slightly antiquated. However, Astro-Classic is actually a powerful, yet easy-to-use tool that simplifies navigation with the sextant enormously.

The programme includes a perpetual yearbook and makes determining your location a matter of just a few clicks. Background videos and explanations in the help function also help with quick orientation.

Bobby Schenk emphasised to YACHT online that Astro Classic "does not replace a sound education and basic knowledge of navigation with celestial bodies". However, the programme simplifies the application in practice and also helps to check your own calculations.

The deliberate jamming of satellite reception by Russian forces in the southern Baltic Sea recently showed why astro knowledge and skills are still important. Read the Background report by YACHT editor Hauke Schmidt and here a Commentary by Bobby Schenk on the importance of astro know-how.

Astro Classic 2.0 only runs on Windows operating systems. It costs 198 euros and can be ordered directly from Bobby Schenk's homepage ( click here! ).

In addition to the USB stick, the price also includes personal advice by e-mail from the developer himself - a real added value for astro fans, as they can get in touch with the man who popularised astronavigation in Germany in the first place.
